Animal-Speak:
The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small
(Ted Andrews, 1993) Want to learn how to
speak the language of critters, large and small? Easy-to-read and understand,
Ted Andrews's bestselling Animal Speak shows readers how to identify his or
her animal totem and learn how to invoke its energy and use it for personal
growth and inner discovery. Nature lovers will love this insightful
compendium, chock-full of touching stories about animals, natural history, and
animal folklore. Readers will also learn magical animal rites and how to read
omens. Animal Speak includes a dictionary of bird, animal, reptile, and insect
totems, which describe each creature's meaning. For example, if a person's
totem is dragonfly, he or she was most likely excessively emotional and
passionate in early years, learning with age to balance it with mental clarity
and control. If a dragonfly suddenly shows up in your life, it means you may
need to gain a new perspective or make a change. --P. Randall Cohan |

Animal-Wise:
The Spirit Language and Signs of Nature (Ted Andrews, 1999)
Customer Reviews:
"Animal-Wise is my favorite of the animal
medicine books that I own. This is a wonderful text that should be used as a
workbook. There are many exercises and Andrews was considerate enough to
include blank pages for notes scattered throughout the text. I love the layout
of this book. Instead of the standard page, most pages have multiple columns.
One column dominates the page while the other serves as a sidebar. Often the
sidebars are circles. In the section on the charkas, the five important
characteristics are set apart in the upper portion of the page, while
information about the chakra and the totem is placed in columns below. This
makes the information easy to spot. Every page has at least one illustration.
The introduction is a beautiful short story: "Dream Song of the Eagle." This
opens the reader to animal medicine. It is followed with enough instruction to
give the reader a solid foundation in understanding animal actions and signs.
The author states: "In anthropology, animism is the belief that all of Nature
- the elements and the animals - have spirit...To zoologists, nothing is
possible which cannot be proven or scientifically verified...If we truly wish
to become animal-wise, we must combine the mysticism of the animism with the
science of zoology without becoming superstitious or narrowly rational." There
are sections on creating an inner totem pole (the charkas), general animal
behavior, animal imitation, developing your animal scent, getting simple
animal answers, the four blessings of every creature, the meaning of
environments, and more. These sections are loaded with exercises. I would call
it an intensive workshop.
The other three-fourths of the book is devoted to an animal dictionary. It is
divided into parts according to the Kingdoms: birds, mammals, insects and
arachnids, reptiles and amphibians, and sea life. Each part begins with a
section about the communication of that kingdom, an index of the animals, and
the related element and how we connect to it. Each animal listing includes the
common names, scientific name, description, life cycle, keynotes, the meaning
of an appearance, and questions to ask yourself when you encounter this
creature.
Some readers might find the unorthodox pages to be distracting. I find them
energizing and entertaining. Otherwise, I can find no fault with this book.
The material is presented in a cohesive, easy-to-understand style. The
narrative is engaging and entertaining. This writer pens work that seems more
like a conversation than an instructional manual. I highly recommend this
book. You will use it for many years, progressing from the beginning to highly
skilled levels of competence with animal medicine. You never stop learning
with the animal mentors." Alicia Karen Elkins, Columnist, Reviewer, Editor
This book contains a list of birds and
mammals (mostly those not typically seen in daily life), a dictionary of
insects and spiders, and a section on reptiles, amphibians and sea life. |

Past
Lives, Future Healing: A Psychic Reveals the Secrets to Good Health and Great
Relationships (Sylvia Browne, 2002) The one expert millions of readers
have learned to trust, one of the few psychics instantly recognizable to
television viewers, Sylvia Browne is back. She has proven herself, in her
fifty years of working as a medium, to be the reigning queen of psychic
phenomena. Here is an insightful look at how much of one's present life is
informed by one's past lives, and how many health and relationship problems
have their roots in unresolved past lives. From unexplained illnesses to
bizarre phobias, from irrational anxieties and fears to the choice of
partners, each can be traced back to past lives. Even birthmarks and recurring
dreams are signs of issues from past lives. Sylvia helps readers recognize
where their deep-rooted problems, fears, and hang-ups all began-and how to
ultimately resolve them.

Life
On the Other Side: A Psychic's Tour of the Afterlife
(Sylvia Browne, Lindsay
Harrison, 2001) Bestselling psychic Sylvia Browne offers a detailed account of
life in heaven in Life on the Other Side. Readers should be warned that it
takes a huge leap of faith to follow this celebrity psychic across the chasm
of doubt to the other side. In her opening chapters she explains that she is
like the young boy in the movie The Sixth Sense--she sees dead people. When
she was a child, these spirits came into her room at night and disappeared
when a light went on. "To this day I can't sleep in a completely dark room,
because the minute I try it the room starts filling up," she writes. "As a
child, it was scary. As an adult, it's just annoying..."
Once she establishes her lengthy connections to life after death (including
conversations with a spirit guide named Francine and her own near-death
experience), Browne launches into life in the fourth dimension. In a chapter
titled "After the Tunnel, Arriving on the Other Side," Browne explains that
newcomers pass through a "hall of wisdom" and then review their most recent
life through a "scanning machine." In the chapter "Beyond the Entrance," Brown
claims that spirits live in whatever kind of home they've longed for, or they
recreate a favorite home from earth. Plus, "the more spiritually advanced we
become, the more physical beauty we're given, as a badge of our progress and
hard work." Sex is known as "merging" and does not require birth control or
any commitments of exclusivity. These kinds of glowing accounts of the other
side cause skeptics to snicker, believers to feel comforted, and thousands of
fans to keep on buying her books. --Gail Hudson

The
Seat of the Soul
(Gary Zukav, 1990) With the same extraordinary skill that he used to demystify
scientific abstraction and the new physics, Gary Zukay, the award-winning
author of The Dancing Wu Li Masters, here takes us on a brilliant and
penetrating exploration of the new phase of evolution we have now entered.
With lucidity and elegance, Zukav explains that we are evolving from a species
that pursues power based upon the perceptions of the five senses -- external
power -- into a species that pursues authentic power -- power that is based
upon the perceptions and values of the spirit. He shows how the pursuit of
external power has produced our survival-of-the-fittest understanding of
evolution, generated conflict between lovers, communities, and superpowers,
and brought us to the edge of destruction.
Using his scientist's eye and philosopher's heart, Zukav shows how infusing
the activities of life with reverence, compassion, and trust makes them come
alive with meaning and purpose. He illustrates how the emerging values of the
spirit are changing marriages into spiritual partnerships, psychology into
spiritual psychology, and transforming our everyday lives. The Seat of the
Soul describes the remarkable journey to the spirit that each of us is on.

Soul
Stories
(Gary Zukav, 2000) One of Gary Zukav's many gifts as a speaker and bestselling
writer is his ability to present complicated metaphysical and spiritual themes
in a way that is simultaneously down-to-earth and spine-tingling. How does he
do it? Through story--the oldest and most powerful form of teaching the mind
and touching the heart. As a frequent guest on Oprah, Zukav has also
discovered that the American public is starved for grounded information on
ethereal topics such as intuition, soulful relationships, and nonhuman
teachers.
Soul Stories is a collection of true tales that speak to themes such as
"Reincarnation," "A Higher Form of Reasoning," "Psychic Archaeology," "The New
Female," and "Universal Humans." Some stories come from Zukav's personal
experience, like his sister's auto accident and his mother instantly knowing
that her daughter was hurt even though they were 100 miles apart. It is
tempting to view these 52 tales of fate, coincidence, and sixth sense with an
air of doubt. "You have to decide," Zukav warns. "That means thinking about it
and, even more important, discovering what you feel about it. Eventually, you
might find that what you feel about a Soul Story is more important to you than
what you think about it." No matter what you feel about the individual tales,
you will leave this book trusting that the best way to understand the meaning
and mysteries of life is through story. --Gail Hudson

The
Heart of the Soul: Emotional Awareness
(Gary Zukav, 2002) We are all students in the "Earth school," according to
authors Gary Zukav and Linda Francis in The Heart of the Soul. And the
time has come to create a whole new lesson plan. For thousands of years we
were outwardly focused, as we mastered the tasks of cultivating food and
building shelter. Unfortunately, we are still outwardly fixated, obsessively
accumulating more wealth, material objects, and power. "What enabled our
species to survive so long is now bad medicine. In fact, it is poison,"
according to Zukav and Francis. What we need now is an inward focus, in which
we cultivate the heart and live in alignment with our souls.
As it turns out, The Heart of the Soul is a timely guidebook, with a
release date exactly three months after the terrorist attack on the World
Trade Center. "The pursuit of external power produces physical violence and
destruction between nations. You can see this in every newscast," the authors
write: Billions of people live in poverty, are hungry, and suffer oppression,
and brutality. Changing these circumstances requires our hearts. It requires
the ability to feel the pain and joy of others, and to take their needs as
seriously as we take our own.
And here is where the heart lessons come in. "As long as there are parts of
yourself that reach outward to make you feel safe, valuable, and loved, you
need to identify them and heal them." The authors include numerous exercises
and activities to help readers feel and understand their emotions in order to
"empower the soul" and live a more rewarding and joyful life. The words and
intentions are indeed poignant and worthwhile. The numerous boxes, diagrams,
and passages in bold print create a self-help structure that some will find
simplistic and others will find inviting. --Gail Hudson

Journey
of Souls: Case Studies of Lives Between Lives (Michael
Duff Newton,
PhD, 1994) Journey of Souls is a controversial yet inspiring
investigation of the big question we all face at one point or another: "What
happens after we die?" To find the answer, Newton opens cases from his private
practice in which he hypnotically regressed his clients to a point between
lives--after death, but before birth. Not only does Newton grapple with
reincarnation, the spirit world, and the nature of the human soul, he also
tackles equally sticky questions such as "Is there a Heaven and Hell?" and
"What are ghosts?" Readers with a penchant for skepticism will balk at the
lack of physical evidence to back up the claims in Journey of Souls, but the
book remains a reassuring voice, affirming that our existence is not limited
to the boundaries of our mortal flesh. --Brian Patterson

The
Walk-In: An Inspiring Story of a Spiritual Homecoming
(Juelle Wilkins, 1995). Juelle and her
husband, Donovan, are dear friends of mine and have been fabulous teachers
and mentors over the years. Juelle channels the Counsel of 12 (see
Other Service Providers for more
information). This is an eye-opening book! From the back cover, " 'In one
remarkable exchange of spirits, Shari's soul left her body and Juelle's
soul moved in.' And so begins the straightforward personal account of
The Walk-In, a narrative that describes the life of Shari as a girl,
wife and mother, and the amazing story of Juelle, the woman Shari became.
Are Walk-Ins more enlightened souls from God's reservoir of marvels who
change places with a soul that is tired and yearns to go home? Has
the universe throughout history sent spiritual messengers to change places
with original souls whose human manifestations have divine tasks to
perform? These and dozes of other perplexing, fundamental questions
are addressed in The Walk-In, the marvelous, gentle and compelling
story of Shari and Juelle, whose transformation may be an everyday miracle
on earth."
A reader's comment: "Some books
change your life. And sometimes they're the ones you least expect to have
an impact. I bought "The Walk-In" because I'd met the author when I stayed
at her B & B in Crestone, Colorado. Although I'm a deeply spiritual
person, I shy away from things too "New Agey," and the concept of a
walk-in certainly fit that category. But I liked Juelle, and as a writer,
I was curious about what she had written. Well, I started the book on the
airplane, and I was riveted from the first page. Not only is the book
extremely well written (something that as a creative writing teacher and
an editor I very much appreciate), but it's written with such honesty and
candor, that I found myself seriously considering what Juelle had to say.
Now, one might say that my reaction grew out of knowing the author, but I
read both the prologue and a chapter called "My Purpose" to my husband who
prides himself on his scientific approach to the world ("skeptical, but
not closed-minded"), and he, too, found himself considering walk-ins as a
real possibility for the first time in his life. But it isn't just the way
Juelle talks about the walk-in experience that makes this book so
compelling. "The Walk-In" contains a philosophy for living life that one
can turn to over and over again and be enriched by every time. I would
love to have just the chapter called "My Purpose" in a small bedside book
that I could pick up and read each night before I sleep. It is one of the
most profound and powerful pieces I have ever read - a spiritual manifesto
that could change the world overnight if people only had the chance to
read it. Thank you, Juelle, for touching my life to the core. I will never
be the same, and I'm glad for it. Namaste."

Walk-Ins/Soul
Exchange (Karyn K. Mitchell, Tammy Gramont, 1999) Reader
review: "Anyone with an
interest in this subject will find this book absolutely fascinating. The
descriptions and characteristics of walk-ins and soul exchanges are
detailed and easily understood, but the case histories kept me riveted to
the book. This book speaks to the soul and renews the realization that the
universe has many different dimensions, life scenarios and plans. I loved
this book!"

Hands
Across Time: The Soulmate Enigma
(Judy Hall, 1997) Ask most people what they mean by soulmate and they will
reply "the person who makes me feel complete," or, "my other half." They are
convinced that there is only one soulmate for them, and that when that
soulmate comes into their life, it will bring them everything they have ever
wished for -- they will live happily ever after. For those who believe in
reincarnation, this soulmate will be someone with whom they have shared life
after life, almost certainly as lovers.
But whilst this may happen, twenty years of exploring karmic relationships led
Judy Hall to believe it is not that simple. A soulmate contact from one life
may not carry over to the present life. The search for a soulmate, or the
memory of a previous association, can so often wreck ordinary relationships.
A better definition of a soulmate might be a soul companion who helps us to
grow. This growth may entail some very hard lessons indeed, and our soulmate
may just be the person with whom we go to hell and back -- not as a punishment
but as a learning process. Nor is the relationship necessarily for ever -- it
is for as long as it takes. What is more, we may have several soulmates with
whom we have been in many different relationships in the past. Regression to
other lives shows that we take on many roles within loosely knit "soul
groups," any member of whom may feel like a soulmate when we meet up again.
Using a variety of case histories drawn from Judy's astrological and past life
regression work, this book will explore the many different facets of the
soulmate experience, including:
- Soulmates: friend or foe?
- How to recognise a soulmate (not always what you expect)
- Karmic love themes
- Soul partners, twin souls, soul companions, group souls
- Serial soulmates
- Did you give your heart away?
- Eternal triangles
- The dangers of finding your soulmate

Deja
Who?: A New Look At Past Lives
(Judy Hall, 1998) Most books presently available are concerned with proving
past lives to be a fact, or with dismissing the idea of reincarnation
altogether. Few explore in depth the question of why there are other lives.
What are we really here for?
The idea of "past lives" can be better expressed as "other lives." Once we
move beyond the present time-frame, time does not appear as linear and
chronological, but rather as a spiral that is all around us with everything
happening at once. From the centre of the spiral, anything can be accessed and
drawn into "present" life. Deja Who? explores the nature of time, the
between life states (with reference to the Tibetan Bardo and Egyptian Book of
the Dead) "future" lives, as well as seeming "past" lives.
Deja Who? is the first book that accepts reincarnation and yet
questions the validity of some recalled past lives. As a Karmic Counsellor and
Regression Therapist, the author has taken many hundreds of people into "other
lives" and is convinced that some of these were indeed "past lives," but by no
means all. Many people apparently regress to the same past life personality
(usually someone famous). Others to specific historical groups. Sometimes it
sounds like a "Who was Who" soap opera! The same old faces appear time after
time, King Arthur and his court, Egyptian Pharaohs, The Taj Mahal group as
well as surprising personages like Judas, bringing up contemporary issues of
betrayal. Deja Who? also explores in depth possible explanations such
as collective memory, cryptamnesia, soul groups, accessing the Akashic Records
and imprinting, and looks at the validity and relevance of past lives in this
context.
When in regression, people also experience lives that are symbolic and
allegoric, rather than actual "truth" but this does not make them any less
valuable -- if they are understood rightly. The book explores how this
information can heal and expand the present life.

Many
Lives, Many Masters
(Brian Weiss, M.D., 1988) Psychiatry and metaphysics blend together in this
fascinating book based on a true case history. Dr. Weiss, who was once firmly
entrenched in a clinical approach to psychiatry, finds himself reluctantly
drawn into past-life therapy when a hypnotized client suddenly reveals details
of her previous lives. During one hypnosis session his client introduces the
spirit guides who have been her soul therapists in between lives. This is when
the story really takes off for Weiss, who discovers that these guides have
specific messages about his dead son as well as Weiss's mission in life. No,
we cannot verify the truth of this story using the limited scientific tools we
have available. However, it is hard to dispute that this well-respected
graduate of Columbia University and Yale Medical School has discovered a
personal truth that has led him to be an enormously popular speaker, author,
and leader in the field of past-life therapy. --Gail Hudson

Messages
From the Masters
(Brian Weiss, M.D., 2001) "In Many Lives, Many Masters, Brian
Weiss opened an unexpected door into the astonishing realm of past-life
regression. In Only Love Is Real, he showed us how we all possess soul mates
from our pasts who wait to reunite with us today. Now, drawing on the wisdom
of the Masters, the spirit guides who shape our destinies, bestselling author
Brian Weiss gives us his most outstanding achievement to date. He reveals the
essential life force in the universe and the ultimate healing energy. Its name
is love. And he shows us how to harness its awesome power. * Marie recounts a
memory from the womb, where, at the family kitchen table, her mother makes a
shockingly accurate prediction about herself and her unborn child. * Diane, a
nurse, finds, below the right shoulder of a male patient, a crescent birthmark
identical to that one of a lost child she had recalled in a past-life
regression. She and the man are now married. * Jim is unwillingly drafted into
the Vietnam War. Later he recalls a past life as a nineteenth-century soldier
scalped by Indians. His reluctance to fight and kill is a reminder of his own
past role as a victim of war. * Carole is awakened by the phone. The voice on
the other end, asking about the family business and the welfare of his loved
ones, belongs to her father, who had died earlier that week.
These stories express a profound yet simple truth. And perhaps no one better
than Brian Weiss-a medical graduate of Yale, the former head of psychiatry at
a major medical center, and today the leading expert on reincarnation-can
share that truth with the world. It is the message imparted by the Masters,
the super-evolved, nonphysical souls who have always been with us and are with
us now. In this book you will hear people giving intimate and startling
testimony to the miraculous potential of love. You will explore what happens
after we die; strategies for fighting anxiety and healing relationships; the
role of God and self-determination. You will explore exercises and meditations
to harness the power of love and utterly transform your life. The Messages
from the Masters are here. And - believes Dr. Weiss - we are ready to embrace
them."

The
Sense of Being Stared At: And Other Aspects of the Extended Mind (Rupert Sheldrake,
2003) Most of us know it well—the almost physical sensation that we are
the object of someone’s attention. Is the feeling all in our head? And
what about related phenomena, such as telepathy and premonitions? Are they
merely subjective beliefs? In The Sense of Being Stared At, renowned
biologist Rupert Sheldrake explores the intricacies of the mind and
discovers that our perceptive abilities are stronger than many of us could
have imagined.
Despite a traditional academic background, Sheldrake has devoted his
notable career as a scientist and writer to challenging the boundaries of
“acceptable” science. A firm believer in the power of an experiment to
yield answers about nature, he has dedicated years of intense research to
investigating our common beliefs about what he calls our “seventh sense.”
After compiling a database of 4,000 case histories, 2,000 questionnaires,
1,500 telephone interviews, and the results of a decade of scientifically
controlled experiments, Sheldrake argues persuasively in this compelling,
innovative book that such phenomena are real. In fact, he rejects the
label of “paranormal” and shows how these psychic occurrences are a normal
part of human nature.
As an explanation for this more intimate connection with the external
world, Sheldrake suggests that our minds are not limited to our brains,
but rather stretch outward to touch the beings and objects that we
perceive. Once this extended influence of the mind is taken into
consideration, many puzzling phenomena begin to make sense, including
telepathy and phantom limbs.
Sheldrake shows that telepathy depends on social bonds. He traces its
evolution from the connections between members of animal groups such as
flocks, schools, and packs. In the modern world, telepathy occurs most
commonly just before telephone calls.
Sheldrake summarizes startling new experimental evidence for the reality
of telephone telepathy, and shows how readers can do tests for themselves.
Combining the tradition of pragmatic experimentation with a refusal to
allow science to fall into dogmatism, Sheldrake pioneers an intriguing new
inquiry into the mysteries of our deepest nature. Rigorously researched,
yet completely accessible, this groundbreaking book provides a refreshing
new way of thinking about ourselves and our relationships with other
people, with animals, and with the world around us. |

Dogs
That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home (Rupert Sheldrake,
1999) It's rare for a book's title to say so clearly what the book is
about. In the case of Rupert Sheldrake's latest work, the controversial
content is right on the front cover. Pet owners will see it and smile in
recognition; skeptical scientists will shake their heads and mutter about
"maverick scholars." We all know of cases of dogs (and cats) who know when
their owners are coming home, who go to wait at the door or window 10
minutes or more before their human arrives. Conditioned by the tight rigor
of contemporary scientific thinking, we either look for rational
explanations or we file the phenomenon away in our minds as "unexplained"
and are careful not to talk about it with our scientist friends.
Sheldrake has shown in the past that he is not afraid to be labeled a
rebel, thanks to his theory of morphic resonance, which suggests the
following: Natural systems, or morphic units, at all levels of complexity
are animated, organized, and coordinated by morphic fields, which contain
an inherent memory. Natural systems inherit this collective memory from
all previous things of their kind by a process called morphic resonance,
with the result that patterns of development and behavior become
increasingly habitual through repetition.
Sheldrake believes that the "telepathy" between pets and humans, or
between flocks of birds or schools of fish that move as a single organism,
can be explained this theory. Sheldrake is less persuaded by anecdotes
that suggest animal clairvoyance--warning of something in the near
future--but refuses to disallow the possibility.
He accepts that the case histories he details so thoroughly in this book
are anecdotal, but that makes them no less real; and as a scientist
himself he sets up experimental conditions for studying this previously
ignored phenomenon that show beyond any doubt that the phenomenon exists.
He castigates traditional scientists for their refusal to countenance
anything that doesn't fit in with their existing paradigms (or prejudices)
and challenges them to come up with some more "acceptable"
explanation--but none is forthcoming.
This fascinating book is a first attempt at a scientific investigation
into a puzzling but quite common occurrence. One hopes that other
scientists will follow Sheldrake's brave lead. --David V. Barrett
