Are You Poisoning Your Pets: A Guidebook to Pet Health and Sanity

Are You Poisoning Your Pets: A Guidebook to Pet Health and Sanity (Nina Anderson, Howard Peiper, 1995) An easy reference book that helps you determine the cause of your pet's health symptoms caused by decorating products, indoor air, cleaning products, pesticides and other chemicals we use daily. A listing of symptoms for each hazard is included. A must whether you have indoor or outdoor pets.

Pets at Risk: From Allergies to Cancer, Remedies for an Unsuspected Epidemic (Alfred J. Plechner, DVM, and Martin Zucker, DVM 2003) Veterinarians are seeing an explosion of health problems in cats, dogs, and horses — chronic diseases, immunological illnesses, cancer, and more. Conditions thought to affect only one breed are showing up in others. This illustrated book explores the causes and treatments. During the past 30 years of clinical work, renowned veterinarian Dr. Alfred Plechner has identified a widespread but unrecognized deficiency in the endocrine-immune system of these animals that is wreaking havoc on the pet population. Pets at Risk is his proven program of intervention and care. The book is designed to be used jointly by pet owners and vets, since part of the treatment involves pharmaceuticals along with a healthy diet and careful attention to food allergies. Positive results from Dr. Plechner’s practice and that of other vets show how these illnesses can be minimized or even eradicated. This guide truly offers a breakthrough method for keeping your pets healthy and safe from risk.

4.8 out of 5 stars Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats (Richard H. Pitcairn, DVM and Susan Hubble Pitcairn, 2005)  "The most comprehensive guide to natural health care for pets -- required reading for all animal lovers!" Allen M. Schoen, DVM, author of Love, Miracles and Animal Healing).

In addition to their thorough discussion of the above, Richard Pitcairn, D.V.M., and his wife, Susan Hubble Pitcairn, M.S., offer a comprehensive "quick reference" section on animal illnesses, organized alphabetically and including a brief description of each illness, preventative measures that may be taken, and holistic and natural treatment options for both dogs and cats--treatments that should always be discussed with one's vet before being used. Occasional line drawings, informative graphs, and the Pitcairn's intelligent prose make this guide a must-have for pet owners interested in a natural lifestyle for their pets.

NEW EDITION (8/05) The book that is the definitive guide to a natural lifestyle for dogs and cats is now completely updated and revised--for the first time in 9 years. Writing with the warmth and compassion that have won them a national following, veterinarian Richard H. Pitcairn and his wife Susan Hubble Pitcairn, noted specialists in chemical-free nutrition and natural healing for pets, show dog and cat owners how to provide the very best in companionship and lifelong care.

They now cover environmental matters, including pollutants both inside the home and out, as well as recent hot-button topics, such as Mad Cow disease, Lyme disease, and the West Nile virus. They've updated dozens of recipes for delicious and healthful pet food and treats. With a guide to handling emergencies and an in-depth "Quick Reference" section, they give specific instructions for preventing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of animal diseases and disorders-with special attention to homeopathic, herbal, and nutritional remedies.

3.6 out of 5 stars Earl Mindell's Nutrition & Health for Dogs: Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy with Natural Preventative Care and Remedies (Earl Mindell, R.Ph., PhD and Elizabeth Renaghan) Just like humans, dogs require exercise and proper nutrition to keep them in top physical form. Earl Mindell's Nutrition and Health for Dogs is the perfect antidote, providing everything responsible dog owners need to know about their dogs' nutritional needs.

Mindell, author of Earl Mindell's Herb Bible and Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible, offers a clear, concise, and easy-to-read guide to the dos and don'ts of dog nutrition, beginning with a general overview of canine nutritional needs. This covers such topics as water quality, fresh foods, and the inadequacy of most commercial dog food. The rest of the book examines more specific aspects of canine health, including your dog's immune system, natural flea control, and common diseases and their treatments. The section on breed-specific problems is especially useful to prospective dog owners, alphabetically listing genetic defects as well as ailments that might arise from various environmental/dietary factors. With its clear, logical layout, handy graphs, and glossary, Earl Mindell's Nutrition and Health for Dogs will help you add years of healthy and happy living to your dog's life.

4.6 out of 5 stars The Nature of Animal Healing: The Definitive Holistic Medicine Guide to Caring for Your Dog and Cat (Martin Goldstein, DVM, 2000)

Contains an immuno-augmentative protocol for treating cancer in pets.

As an accomplished doctor of veterinary medicine, Martin Goldstein is well respected for his 25 years worth of experience in the field--experience he effectively utilizes in conjunction with his expertise in holistic medicine in The Nature of Animal Healing. Goldstein begins with a broad explanation of the origins of diseases in pets, then moves on to taking action against those diseases, not only offering thorough discussions of specific ailments--including cancer, allergies, and arthritis--and the holistic medicines available to help in the healing process, but also speaking to the "dubious legacy of vaccines" as well as the questionable quality of pet food. Finally, Goldstein turns his attention to the spiritual realm, addressing both the bonds that we have with our pets--and how those bonds aid in preventing and fighting our pets' health problems--as well as dealing with the death of a beloved pet. Goldstein's expert advice, inclusion of inspiring real-life cases, and thorough resource "compendium of holistic books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations" make this book a valuable addition to any pet owner's library. --Julia King

The Nature of Animal Healing is a groundbreaking, inspirational contribution to animal care. Dr. Martin Goldstein, one of the most successful and best-known holistic veterinarians in the country, offers here, for the first time, invaluable insights into how to give our pets a healthy, happy, and long life.

Dr. Goldstein--a graduate of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine who runs a renowned clinic in South Salem, New York--begins by explaining his approach to alternative treatment: what it is, how it works, and why it's especially important that animals be treated holistically. Holistic pet care essentially revolves around the notion that the best way to cure an animal who is ill is to help the animal cure itself. We are not the true healers of our pets--they are. By treating the root of the problem instead of its symptoms, holistic medicine enables our pets to regain and maintain their own health.

In this comprehensive and accessible book, Dr. Goldstein not only shares his philosophy of how animals should--must--be treated, but also shows us exactly what to do. With moving and often entertaining examples from his years of practice, he offers prescriptive advice for the pet lover of every stripe: why we shouldn't feed our animals commercial pet food; why vaccines can actually do more harm than good; how acupuncture and homeopathic medicine can be used to help our pets; why pets need to experience a "healing crisis" in order to get well; and much, much more.

In his practice, Dr. Goldstein has had extraordinary success treating cancer and leukemia. Here, he begins to decipher the riddle of those killer diseases and shows us how best to treat them, as well as how to prevent them from occurring. Included is the exhaustive "Alphabet of Ailments," a list that tackles common afflictions one by one--the most useful guide ever published in a book on animal care.

Dr. Goldstein also turns to the spiritual realm, addressing how the emotional bonds we form with our animals have the power to provoke and cure disease. In his smart, helpful, and comforting style, he tells us how to deal with the inevitable death of a pet--both physically and psychologically.

Finally, there is an indispensable source guide: a complete listing of pet health-care centers, doctors, and products. So wherever you live, you will be able to act on the advice and recommendations you are sure to take to heart. The Nature of Animal Healing is a revolutionary guide that no pet owner should be without.

Even has some astrology for your pet! You'll LOVE this book -- and recommend it to friends."

[unrated] Plump Pups and Fat Cats: A Seven-Point Weight Loss Program for Your Overweight Pets (Steve Duno, 1999) If your portly pet has gained too much weight, it can lead to health problems such as diabetes, hip and back problems, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Pet owners concerned about their dog's or cat's weight problem can lead their pet out of obesity by following the sound advice and practical ideas in Plump Pups and Fat Cats. Animal behaviorist Steve Duno has developed a seven-point weight-loss program not unlike the ones that work for humans: the plan emphasizes eating the right foods at the right times, exercise, and directing your pet toward healthier activities than munching on kibble.

Duno's first point of order is to ask pet owners to take a hard look at their pet's poor eating habits and the role the owner plays. After all, as Duno points out, dogs and cats can't open the refrigerator themselves. By recording your pet's weekly eating and activities in a journal, you may be surprised at how many extra table scraps and snacks, and how little exercise, Fido or Fifi actually gets. Duno then helps you figure out your animal's caloric needs, based on age, weight, breed, and activity level.

Duno also explains why free-feeding (leaving the food dish out all day) can actually work against your pet's natural instincts. In place of free-feeding, which many people do while they're at work to alleviate pet boredom, he recommends adding variety to diet and exercise. Duno suggests a number of exercise options for both dogs and cats (that's right, you can get your cat to exercise). He's also designed "enrichment programs" to help you stimulate your pet's intellect and alleviate boredom, another cause of overeating.

By following the guidelines and suggested activities in Plump Pups and Fat Cats, pet owners will learn from Duno's firm but friendly manner how to take charge of their pets' lifestyles and get them back on a healthier, happier track. --Kris Law

4.4 out of 5 stars The Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog (Wendy Volhard and Kerry Brown DVM, 200)  Contains a section on use of flower essences. Finding nutritional data for dogs can be a difficult business--and while much of the information in Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog is presented by anecdote, there's still plenty of worthwhile reading here. Aimed at dog owners that are already fairly committed to nonallopathic forms of health care for their pets, much of the book is based around author Wendy Volhard's Natural Diet. The Natural Diet is fairly labor intensive, as Volhard is the first to admit, but she provides page after page of testimonials that credit the diet with improved temperaments, better activity levels, and exemplary physical health. Each ingredient in this diet is discussed in depth, so owners not ready to take the step of providing a complete diet from scratch can still learn about potentially valuable supplements, as well as what ingredients to look for in a commercial diet.

Beyond the dietary information provided, there are several chapters that give solid explanations of different types of health care available, including homeopathy, kinesiology, and the five-element theory. For those who still prefer allopathic care for their dogs, the chapters that cover standard lab tests are extremely useful, finally giving a layman's guide for urinalysis, blood serum, liver function, and thyroid testing. A glossary defines various terms such as acidosis and hepatic, and each description is easily understandable, even by those with no medical background whatsoever. For puppy owners, the chapter discussing vaccinations is informative--Volhard questions the necessity of many we take for granted, and suggests several methods for lowering the required number for your pup.

Ultimately, the majority of this book is geared toward folks who are already committed to providing their pooches with alternative health care and homemade food. No matter how interesting the dietary concepts presented here, if you aren't already a true believer it's not likely that Volhard's anecdotes will provide you with enough statistical proof to completely overhaul your dog's way of life. --Jill Lightner

4.5 out of 5 starsNatural Healing for Dogs and Cats (Diane Stein, 1993).  Detailed section on use of flower essences. This book is written for the pet owner who wants to extend holistic healing methods to the entire household. The author takes pet medicine to a very natural conclusion, drawing on the same New Age therapeutic approaches used for humans. Stein shows how to use nutrition, vitamins, minerals, massage, herbs, and homeopathy to promote pet health. Illustrations.

4.9 out of 5 starsNew Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats: Over 1,000 At-Home Remedies for Your Pet's Problems (Amy D. Shojai and the editors of Prevention for Pets, 1999)  Information from more than 100 top veterinarians covering over 1,000 holistic remedies for treating over 100 illnesses and conditions.  Discusses use of herbs, acupressure, homeopathy, diets, healing energy, massage, crystals and healing magnets, music therapy, therapeutic touch, and flower essences among others.

Articles in Time and US News and World Reports have cited alternative medicine as the fastest-growing area in veterinary care. More than ever, pet owners are demanding facts on using these non-invasive healing methods for their pets. Author Amy Shojai has interviewed top vets across the country, including members of the Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and noted veterinarian Susan Wynn. Pet owners will learn why some vets moved away from mainstream medicine, how the "Healing Instinct" leads animals to their own natural cures, and how alternative therapies actually work. Readers will find tips for treating problems like aggression, fleas, and heart problems with accupressure, homeopathy, nutrition, herbs, exercise and traditional home remedies. Sidebars give "Alternative Success" stories and warning signs for when to call the vet. Now pet owners can be sure their pets have the same practical, holistic healing options as humans do.

4.9 out of 5 starsVeterinarians' Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs: Safe and Effective Alternative Treatments and Healing Techniques from the Nation's Top Holistic Veterinarians (Martin Zucker, 2000) The world of veterinary medicine is changing. People are realizing that if alternative medicine is better for them, it's better for their pets, too. Dogs are visiting acupuncturists, chiropractic doctors, and homeopaths. Still, many dog owners are unaware that such simple measures as changing their pet's diet and using vitamins, herbs, and other natural cures can help prevent or heal ailments ranging from excessive scratching to depression to a host of serious diseases.

The Veterinarians' Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs is both an introduction and a guide to the vast world of natural healing methods, treatments, and foods now available for dogs. Author Martin Zucker offers advice from dozens of holistic practitioners and licensed veterinarians, who share their recipes, insights, and "prescriptions." Here dog owners will find information on everything from nutritional supplements to massage therapy, as well as how these treatments can be used alone or in conjunction with traditional medications and surgical techniques.

5.0 out of 5 starsHomeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs: Small Doses for Small Animals (Donald Hamilton, DVM, 1999) This book, the first book written by an American veterinarian specializing in homeopathic medicine, teaches the average consumer how to use natural remedies to treat common, acute, and chronic problems in cats and dogs. Hamilton covers digestive complaints, skin diseases (including flea irritation), respiratory disorders, urinary diseases, mouth, teeth, and gum problems, ear pain, musculoskeletal ailments, injuries and traumas, and psychological and behavioral problems. He also addresses several issues that cannot be found in any other book on veterinary medicine including how to treat hyperactive cats and dogs, how to differentiate between true healing and suppression or palliation of a disease, and the dangers of veterinary vaccination.

5.0 out of 5 starsHomeopathic Treatment for Small Animals Principles & Practice (Christopher E. Day, 1992) Reader Review: "For many years this was my favorite book on veterinary homeopathy, and it's still near the very top of my list. Unlike a number of books on veterinary homeopathy that suggest remedies for specific conditions almost as if they were allopathic drugs, Dr. Day devotes quite a bit of space to case taking, the various methods used to finding the correct remedy, and case management. He even touches upon constitutional prescribing for chronic disease, but makes it clear that nobody can hope to successfully prescribe remedies for chronic conditions after reading only a few books. There is much emphasis on the need to keep reading and studying if one hopes to become successful at homeopathic prescribing.

Dr. Day's "symptoms of disease with some recommended remedies" chapter follows the basic layout of Kent's repertory for the various body systems and is very easy to use. There are further chapters on homeopathic first aid, treatment of specific disease (e.g., parvo, distemper, kennel cough), mental problems, special problems affecting the young and the old, prevention of disease, and the relationship of homeopathy to conventional medicine and diagnosis (includes section on vaccinosis and drugs capable of blocking homeopathic treatment). Dr. Day also includes some helpful case studies in which different levels of prescribing were used (e.g., constitutional treatment, treatment of underlying pathology, treatment at the presenting symptom level, etc.). This is followed up with a materia medica of key remedies, a glossary of homeopathic terms, and brief sections on miasm theory, nosodes, and nutrition. All in all, highly recommended for anyone with an interest in veterinary homeopathy."

The Well-Connected Dog: A Guide to Canine Acupressure (Amy Snow, Nancy Zidonis, Ella Bittel, Carla Stroh, 1999) The Well-Connected Dog: A Guide to Canine Acupressrue" is an easy to follow manual with lots of illustrations, photographs and charts. Acupressure connects you with 1000's of years of natural healing and has proven to enhance performance, health and overall well-being. This book gives you the tools to participate in your dog's optimal health.

Dr. Michael W. Fox, Author and Veterinarian: This book is a contribution to the necessary turn-around in our thinking about life and reactions toward disease and suffering. It is indeed a welcome and much needed addition to the growing library of useful texts and manuals on companion animal care and health maintenance. Additionally, there is benefit for those who discover the power of the healing touch. It is something that we can all give, and refine and in the process we facilitate our own healing and wholeness as we relax, focus and touch.

Acu-Cat: A Guide to Feline Acupressure (Nancy Zidonis, Amy Snow, 2000) "Acu-Cat: A Guide to Feline Acupressure" helps you participate in your cat's optimal health. This step-by-step manual has over 35 photographs, 60 charts, and 30 illustrations for ease of learning. "Acu-Cat" covers the basics of a feline acupressure treatment and includes meridian charts, acupoint charts and over 30 specific treatment plans for common physical conditions and behavior issues.

Dr. Jane Bicks, Noted Veterinarian, Author and TV Host: I believe that veterinarians should study this art - to return to the days when healing was about mind, spirit, and body. We need to know how to make our cats more comfortable in our offices and during home visits by applying acupressure. The time has come to integrate traditional medicine with alternative medicine. Once we do that, we will truly be serving our feline members.

Each beautifully illustrated chapter is written from two viewpoints, one from the leading holistic avian veterinarian and the other from a bird owner's viewpoint. Holistic care is defined and the value of this type of care in relation to conventional western medicine is discussed. Other interesting topics include the physical bird, the emotional bird, nutrition and special holistic therapies.

3.33 out of 5 starsA Guide to a Naturally Healthy Bird: Nutrition, Feeding and Natural Healing Methods for Parrots (Alicia McWatters, 1997) Natural health care for caged birds and especially for parrots. Diets including live foods, seeds, fruits and recipes for mash, along with topics such as environmental health, illness and safety guidelines.

4.5 out of 5 starsFeeding Your Pet Bird (Petra M. Burgmann, Michele Earle-Bridges, 1993) A MUST for those unsure of the best avian diet, or those with finicky eaters. The section on quantity of vitamins etc per item of food was invaluable in creating a balanced diet for my birds, although I did have to look on the Internet for the ideal quantities for a companion bird. Even better, it has a whole section on how to transfer your bird to a new diet without stress.

[unrated] Natural Healing for Horses: The Complete Guide to Complementary Health Care for Your Horse (Jenny Morgan, 2002) More and more horse owners are turning to alternative therapies to enhance the health and well-being of their equine companions. Many believe - as Jenny Morgan does - that horses kept in a healthy, all-natural environment have fewer health problems. Thus, this essential reference for horse owners begins with preventive care. Natural Healing for Horses teaches how to know a horse thoroughly, from forelock to fetlock; understand a horse's moods and immediately recognize the slightest change in appearance or behavior; build a stabling system that has proper space, drainage, and safety; select the ideal pasture location; and develop affordable and natural routines for exercising, feeding, watering, and grooming horses kept in a stable or at pasture.

The second section of this book addresses specific health issues and suggested therapies, including herbal and homeopathic treatments, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, and aromatherapy, as well as standard veterinary treatments.

Whatever the need, Morgan provides all the information necessary to choose the right natural treatment to improve a horse's general well-being or solve particular health problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Treatment of Horses by Homeopathy (George MacLeod, 1977) Reader Review: This is an excellent book if you are considering using homeopathic treatment for your horse. Most common and some uncommon horse ailments are covered and suggested remedies and dosages are given. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is that the author assumes the reader has more knowledge of medical terminology than it is likely the average reader will have. It helps to have a good medical dictionary at you elbow when you read this book.

4.5 out of 5 stars Equine Acupressure: A Working Manual (Nancy A. Zidonis, Amy Snow, 1999) Natural Horse Magazine 03/99 If you have ever wished for health care or medical treatment for you or your animals that is free, sage and simple to use, available night and day, and wherever you are, be assured that it exists, and it is right at your fingertips. It is called Acupressure. "Equine Acupressure, A Working Manual" provides a thorough overview of the origins of acupressure (TCM), explains its effectiveness and describes its benefits. The meridian system is pictured and described in detail, including each meridian's function, how it relates to the internal organs and other parts of the body, and the indicators for treatment. This book teaches the reader how to perform acupressure treatments, what to do before, during and after, and when not to perform acupressure. It stresses that attunement to the horse and allowing him to be the guide throughout the treatment is of utmost importance. This book teaches how to observe the horse and what to expect. "Equine Acupressure, A Working Manual" provides a wealth of valuable information. It is written in clearly understandable language and presents practical information is a well-organized format. Its purpose is to provide comfort and healing for the horse, through acupressure, by teaching the reader to actively participate in his or her horse's health and well-being. It does just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Equine Massage:  A Practical Guide (Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt, 1997) People in the horse world know all too well that performance horses, like human athletes, are trained, fed and cared for so they can go faster, jump higher and run longer. Daily training and competing can result in injuries, aches and pains, which if treated by drugs alone may only mask the problem and not remedy it. This is why equine massage therapist Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt created a program of techniques that will enable owners and riders, trainers and grooms to alleviate soreness and pain in the horse's most vulnerable stress sites; identify and treat the injuries common to any horse sport; use relaxation and maintenance routines for the horse's mental and physical well-being. Hourdebaigt provides step-by-step instruction and more than 150 photographs and diagrams so that everyone—including nonprofessionals—can learn to massage their horse. Equine Massage may be the key to unlocking the door to a horse's future, one that promises good health and improved performance.

4.5 out of 5 stars The Well Adjusted Horse: Equine Chiropractic Methods You Can Do (Daniel R. Kamen, DVM, 1999) Horse riders, horse lovers, and equestrians everywhere will enjoy this new book from our favorite veterinary chiropractor, Dr. Daniel Kamen. He explains how any horse owner or stable keeper can take proper care of their animal. These animals are the equine version of highly trained athletes, he says, and like any athlete they are susceptible to strain or injury. Whether the patient is human or animal, the basic chiropractic technique -manipulating the spine to return misaligned bones to their correct positions -is the same. With the aid of a few bales of hay for height, and a few of these easy-to-follow techniques, you can give your animal the proper care he needs to keep him on track. Dr. Kamen has treated racehorses for what he terms "a nagging backache." With his trademark humor and anecdotes about his adventures as an animal chiropractor, Dr. Kamen has again delivered a book that will delight owner and animal alike. A wonderful gift for horse owners.
5.0 out of 5 stars Natural Goat Care  (Pat Coleby, 2001) Reader Review: I cannot say enough about this wonderful book! It is simply chock full of terrific information! I found the sections on minerals and vitamins most riveting. Ms. Coleby really covers all the bases, listing each mineral and vitamin necessary for good health, how it is utilized, and signs of deficiency. There are also chapters about different goat breeds, farming methods, husbandry practices, and the psychological needs of goats. I found the chapter on health problems to be very informative with a wonderful section devoted to CAE. I just can't recommend this book highly enough. If you own goats, you just have to get this book!!

HERBS

5.0 out of 5 starsHerbs for Pets (Mary L. Wulff-Tilford, DiHom., Professional Herbalist, AHG; Gregory L. Tilford, 1999) The Tilfords' book introduces readers to hundreds of plant medicines that can be used in the daily care of animals. The authors, both herbalists, begin with a chapter on the principles and practices of herbalism, explaining the basics of herbal preparations and what they call the "ethical use of herbs." They discuss the connection between herbs and diet and give guidelines for feeding dogs and cats. The bulk of the book is a 191-page guide to herbs for animals. Each entry includes a description of the plant, its habitat and range, its cycle and bloom season, preparation, common uses, availability, and propagation and harvest techniques. Also included are a warning of its side effects--if any--and a photograph of the plant. There's a wealth of information here, enabling pet owners to select, prepare, and apply natural remedies, some of which may be growing in their own backyards. George Cohen

3.9 out of 5 starsThe Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat (Juliette de Bairacli Levy, 1995)  Now available in paperback, this is the fifth edition of Levy's handbook for herbal veterinary care. Updated to include information on cats as well as dogs, this guide covers rearing of young, treating specific diseases with herbs, and a general discussion on disease prevention.

3.9 out of 5 starsThe Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm & Stable (Juliette de Bairacli Levy, 1991)  This fascinating book is a valuable guide for farmers and the general public concerned about the overuse of nonnatural medicine, herbicides, and insecticides in farm management and animal husbandry. The author, Juliette de Baïracli Levy, offers detailed directions for treating all farm animals with natural methods, while stating her evidence that "mechanized" farming methods have led to the demise of domesticated animals' overall health. She asserts that poor and inadequate natural habitat, unnatural feeding practices, and a reliance on medicine to fight individual symptoms of disease without addressing the whole animal have weakened farm animals' innate disease-fighting ability. Her argument for a return to reliance on the natural and away from the synthetic and artificial rearing and feeding methods of farm animals becomes more urgent and relevant given the outbreaks of "mad cow disease" and other ailments caused by these practices. This book, used in conjunction with proper consultation with a veterinarian, can help animal owners and farmers move back to natural and healthy farming practices.

3.9 out of 5 starsA Modern Horse Herbal (Hillary P. Self, 1996) In this informative and well-organized herbal-remedy guide, Hilary Page Self writes from her years of experience using herbal remedies and alternative therapies for common ailments and injuries of her horses as well as using herbs to enhance their overall health. The author never "plays veterinarian," and encourages the consultation of a qualified veterinarian for serious illness and injury. Along with providing a list of common ailments and injuries that can be effectively treated with herbal medicine, the author gives a list of 50 readily obtainable herbs and plant-based remedies that have been useful and proven effective in the treatment of her horses. Detailed advice is given on how to make herbal preparations to be administered orally as well as on the use of herbs in making poultices and compresses. Throughout the book, the author describes situations whereby horses and ponies, if left in the wild, seek out certain plant substances to feed on depending upon what they need nutritionally. She firmly believes that an accepting and positive change in human attitudes toward herbal remedies will ultimately benefit the overall health of horses and that the use of herbal medicine for horses and other animals does not have to be at odds with modern veterinary methods.

ABOUT CANCER, VACCINES, ARTHRITIS AND OTHER ISSUES

5.0 out of 5 starsWhat Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines (Catherine O’Driscoll, 1997)

Customer Review: "We people have a tendency to believe that anyone whom we think know more than we do, are "gods". By this definition all that we don't understand, and that people tell us, we tend to believe and honor as true...like sheep in a herd we follow the leader. Ms O'Driscoll makes sure that NO ONE who reads this book will leave untouched by the facts she unconvers. And it is not one fact, it is one after another! One more horrifying than the other. She shows that very many of today's allergies, asthma, arthritis etc are really often due to immunization and booster vaccines. I say, this book is not only good, it is NECESSARY!"
